Kevin Huang

Kevin is currently a second-year Chemical Engineering student at the University of Waterloo. As the Old Scona 2024 valedictorian, Kevin graduated with the highest marks of the graduating class, achieving perfect scores in Chemistry and Math throughout high school.

Kevin wishes to pass down his secret for his academic success to others through teaching them the meticulous ways in which he studies and breaks down material. Throughout high school, Kevin has continuously tutored other students, helping them break down complex problems and providing them with the support they need in order to succeed in their course. Through other volunteer programs, Kevin has received extremely positive remarks regarding his teaching methods, sense of responsibility and ability to break down the problem for students to understand. Students and parents alike have said that he is well-prepared and professional, further proving his competency as a teacher for our organization.

Kevin is on a co-op work term right now as part of his university program where he is working a full-time job in the production and manufacturing industry. In his spare time, Kevin loves to solve problems (what a typical engineer!) with his car by performing maintenance repairs. He is also in the process of completing various online certifications relating to the oil and gas industry. Problem-solving and continuous learning are two of the top things Kevin enjoys doing -- both of which are staple qualities that Light Up Learning tries to develop in students!

Dan Zhang

Meet Dan, our dedicated Chemistry 20 Teacher. A graduate of Old Scona Academic, Dan completed the partial-IB program with First Class Academic Honours across all three years of high school. He is now entering his second year of studies in Biochemistry and Pharmacology at the University of Alberta. As a well-rounded student with strengths in both the sciences and humanities, Dan brings a balanced and insightful approach to teaching—aiming to pass on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of learners.

Outside of academics, Dan has always managed to wear many hats. He currently works multiple jobs, including as a teacher with WCAC, front desk assistant at a pharmacy, and as a private tutor, where he has helped several students make significant academic progress and gain newfound confidence in their studies. He also recently became a University of Alberta Ambassador, a role that allows him to support and inspire fellow students and incoming first-years through mentorship and campus outreach.

Dan has remained deeply engaged in extracurricular pursuits, balancing roles as a track and field athlete, and volunteer with CapitalCare and Canadian Blood Services NextGen. These experiences have helped him develop exceptional time management, communication, and organizational skills—qualities that shine through in his lesson planning and teaching style.

Looking ahead, Dan will be participating in research focused on how specific proteins respond to various pathogens, and bioengineering probiotic yeasts to help prevent and treat intestinal infections caused by Clostridium bacteria and Cholera. His curiosity, drive, and commitment to helping others—both in and out of the classroom—make him an invaluable member of our team.

Tristan Kwan

Tristan is a second-year student studying Biochemistry and Cell Biology at the University of Alberta. Having graduated from Old Scona Academic as a full IB First Class Academic Honours student, Tristan plans on pursuing the path of medicine with the ambitious aspirations of becoming an anesthesiologist.

Tristan works well with others being friendly and able to easily communicate with students to help them improve. On top of his full IB course load in high school, Tristan also took leadership courses proving himself as a leader capable of assisting others. Currently, Tristan knows over four languages and is studying his fifth, making him versatile in communication. He also has hopes of doing an exchange program abroad, showing a commitment to constantly widen his horizons and seek to build more international connections.

Outside of his life at school, Tristan has taught swimming and works as a lifeguard. Through teaching his classes, he has learned how to efficiently work with students of all ages and communicate with them in a way that helps them maximize their learning and understanding. Watching his students grow and become proficient swimmers is something that always puts a smile on his face — a sense of satisfaction that is truly priceless.

Aside from work, Tristan volunteers regularily for the Canadian Blood Services as well as the Raising Hopes Foundation, all of which gives him more experience and knowledge into the medical field. Tristan is also currently the President of a long running prestigious club at the University of Alberta, having to tackle an extremely important role as only a second year.

Ahmed Mahmood

Ahmed is currently a second-year student at the University of Alberta studying Honours Neuroscience. He graduated from Old Scona Academic High School in 2024 after completing the Full IB Diploma with First Class Academic Honours in his studies. During his time in high school, Ahmed has been awarded the highest class achievement in Science 10, Chemistry 20IB, and Computer Science 30IB.

Throughout his time in high school, Ahmed was a Warrant Officer Second Class in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He came to lead nightly and ceremonial drills as the Squadron Commander and taught a variety of lessons from aviation and aerodynamics to leadership and community service each week. Along with his participation in community service like Remembrance Day Parades and physical activities like field training exercises, Ahmed shows his disciplined nature along with a kind desire to help others.

In the summer of 2025, Ahmed is working as a volunteer research student in an orthopedics/orthopedic surgery laboratory researching and testing joint preservation protocols for healthier cartilage storage prior to transplantation. Learning about different medical research practices including solution pipetting, dissection, viability, and histology with and under his seniors at the laboratory, Ahmed not only shows practical skill and medical aspirations, but also a willingness to contribute for others' benefit and guidance for students who may want to do the same.
